BIOGRAPHY
Marija began drawing and painting in her early years in Croatia. She immigrated to Calgary in 1968, and in 1972 enrolled in Advertising and Illustrating course from Minneapolis USA. Her art training also includes art history, drawing and painting courses at Alberta College of Art and Design, the Faculty of Art at the University of Calgary, and workshops with renowned artists.
Marija is a professional artist in all painting media and subject matter, though she specializes in portraiture. Her passion is to paint people, because each painting is a new challenge. Artistic goals are to continue to learn and improve.
Marija is a Senior member of the Canadian Institute of Portrait Artists (CIPA), a signature member of the Federation of Canadian artists (AFCA), and a member of Pastel Artists of Canada (PAC).
HIGHLIGHTS
Marija's work has won many awards including First and Third Place at the Art Instruction School of Minneapolis, numerous Federation of Canadian Artists awards, award with the Pastel Society of Canada, Jurors Choice for Best of Show Flat Art, and Collectors Choice Flat Art award at the Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction. She was also a finalist for Canada's Immigrants of Distinction Award in 2000 for her contribution to Art and Culture.
Marija's work has been featured in the North Light publication "The Best of Canadian Pastels" book, International magazine, Pastel Artist International, and several other magazines and newspapers.

Marija's paintings are found in private and public collections throughout Canada and internationally including:

- Ropes and Gray law firm, Boston, USA;
- Croatian Embassy, Ottawa;
- Croatian Cultural Center, The Rundle College,
- The Museum of the Regiments, and the Police Museum, Calgary
