STATEMENT
Born in Northern Ireland in 1949, he is the son of artist Daniel James Mace Izzard. Daniel Paul immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1955. Graduating with honours from Ontario College of Art and Design in the Drawing & Painting Program, he continued an association with the college as a guest lecturer in addition to working at Ryerson University and George Brown College.
While continuing to paint, Izzard became interested in another visual medium, film. Through the seventies and eighties he worked as a scenic contractor, set designer, art director, scenic painter, production manager and assistant director in Feature Film, Documentary and the Television Commercial Industry, ultimately becoming a Director Cameraman.
Izzard has since totally withdrawn from the film community and now focuses his talents completely on the canvas. Izzard has had several one-man shows in Toronto. His paintings explore the modern world in a classic style exhibiting a sense of reverence for a time gone by. Even though they are very much in the present these paintings often have a surreal timeless quality. He employs atmosphere and light endeavoring to create a three-dimensional world on a two dimensional surface. Indeed, many of Izzard’s paintings allow the viewer to almost fall into them.
Since June of 2000, Izzard has been a senior member of The Canadian Institute of Portrait Artists (CIPA).
Returning from Italy last summer, Daniels recent work is a labour of love. Love of the Italian countryside, the warmth and sincerity of its people, the beauty of its towns and villages and the colour that is Italy. As always he continues to paint other European subjects as well as Canada and the U.S.
